What's required?

Effective August 1, 2011, DBPR has approved the SafeStaff® Employee Foodhandler Online Training Program. In an effort to stay current with alternative and effective methods of employee training, SafeStaff® the DBPR Contracted provider, is now offering the convenience and flexibility of online training. For more information read our Foodhandler FAQs. Since 1997, the State of Florida has mandated that all food service workers be trained in food safety. The SafeStaff® Foodhandler Training Program is the contracted program of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) and contains the following six mandated key food safety principles:

Ensuring proper personal hygiene
Preventing cross-contamination
Controlling time and temperature when handling food
Proper cleaning and sanitizing
The causes and effects of major foodborne illnesses
Ensuring proper vermin control

Florida requires all food service employees in a licensed DBPR establishment to be trained on correct food handling and hygiene practices. Only DBPR division-approved training programs are accepted as meeting the training requirement.

DBPR enacted the current Food Employee Training requirements in 2001. View a copy of the Florida Statutes.

SafeStaff® Employee Foodhandler Program is DBPR’s contracted provider for employee food safety training. Is the Foodhander program you are using valid in Florida? Ask your vendor for their DBPR Approved Provider Number and validate it to their approved provider list. Here's the DBPR site that describes food service employee Foodhandler training requirements.

Choosing a program...

When selecting a training vendor be sure to:
Get it in writing - know what you are paying for and have a complete understanding of the services and products you are ordering.
Get the company name, the contact name and phone number when you call - you'll be grateful to have a name and contact who'll be there the next time you have questions about anything relating to the hospitality industry.
Check with the Better Business Bureau - especially when selecting someone you do not know - we frequently received call from folks who did business with a new vendor and paid up front only to find out their class was canceled and now no one is answering the phone or returning calls.
Understand your discounts - Are you an FRLA member and do you qualify for a membership discount on the products you are buying? When you log in your membership discounts are automatically applied to your order. If you do not currently have an individual account with us, no problem! When creating your account, select your member company from the drop down list and the rest is automatic.
Consider your commitment to food safety – purchasing a book for each employee, training your employees in food safety and issuing certificates of completion and wallet cards may cost a little more in time and money, but pays off much higher dividends when it results in giving your employees the knowledge and tools to serve food safely and prevent foodborne illness. Your time and money is valuable, use and invest it wisely.
Follow the instructions – When performing the SafeStaff® Employee Foodhandler Training be sure to: 1. Complete the Wall Certificate and keep it in an easily accessible file for the inspector; 2. Issue each employee a wallet card with instructions to keep it on their person; 3. Return a completed bubble sheet from the back of the book for each employee trained to the address provided in the book (We do not accept photocopies.); 4. Send your bubble forms via traceable mail; and 5. Allow three weeks for your training records to be updated and then view and print your online training report.
